Statement
Fortitude is a series of images taken of impromptu driftwood beach huts and sculptures lining the California Coast. Fortitude considers how humans continuously manipulate their environment in the quest to maintain it; as materials devolve through nature, construction, trash, and driftwood; inspiring impromptu collective assemblage of temporary shoddy shelters that terrify and protect inhabitants until they fall again in the repetitive cycle of wash and repeat. The natural erosion of driftwood from both found and natural materials creates a sense of familiarity and security, offset by the precarious construction to create a sense of unease.
